Communication and teamwork: Why they are important for me?

“When people talk, listen completely. Most people never listen.” - Ernest Hemingway

Enhanced Communication skills never fail to emphasize their importance in our day-to-day incidents. Be it clarifying details with tutors or chatting with friends or while delivering a presentation or talking to parents; effectively communicating one's views and needs, projects a good image of oneself and bolsters relationships. In professional field too, effective communicating skills such as clarity, coherence, conciseness and courtesy help in cementing you relationship with your employers and colleagues.

Teamwork encompasses working together towards a common goal and at the same time putting aside personal issues and conflicts. It involves working together, helping each other, analyzing each other's work and providing constructive feedback. This method is beneficial as it gives one an opportunity to work on his weakness and improve his skills. This is different from group-work, where the work is individually managed and the end product is not a collective effort.

The age old maxim "United we stand, divided we fall", may have lost its luster and termed as a cliché but the true value of the proverb has not faded. Man is an interdependent entity. For any job, no matter how menial it is, no way the outcome will be the best possible there is, unless it has been brought about through effective teamwork. Be it Edmund Hillary scaling heights of Everest or setting up a business venture; a Tenzing Norway is indispensable for success of the endeavor.

We all know effective teamwork does not come automatically. It requires a lot of hard work and compromise. And this is what I expect to learn in this module.

Here’s a nice video clip I found which tries to explain the Importance of Teamwork along with the success and happiness it can achieve!

Hi Saurabh,

Interesting post you have here! I like the way how you included this personal timeline from baby to adult, and how you included communication to be involved in all walks of your life. Personally, I feel the same way; communication and teamwork is an important life skill that everyone should possess.

You mentioned about being in a foreign land, and realizing how important teamwork and communication skills are.
If you are by chance a little overwhelmed by this ‘foreign land’, don’t worry, because I’m just as overwhelmed as you are! In my life, I had never encountered so many foreigners from so many different countries in a single classroom.
In fact, I feel like I’m the foreigner now. This situation has done to me what it had done to you; I’m beginning to realize just how important communication and teamwork is. As we graduate from this course, (which we will,) we will gradually encounter more and more strangers/foreigners. I’m sure that by that time, we would already have the proper skills and knowledge to deal with different sorts of situations and communicate effectively.

By the way, I agree with the part about teamwork requiring hard work and compromise. Let us all work hard together to acquire the necessary skills we need in the future!

Cheers

Zhen

Hello Saurabh,

The part where you showed how communication is essential as we grow up was very interesting. Whether young or old, having a good grasp in effective communication will definitely help us along the way. Thus we should keep on improving ourselves.

Making a good team is always much easier with friends that you already know; the way they work, their temperaments etc. However, it's never always the case. Most of the time, we will be grouped up or will have to work with strangers. Even so, we need to be able to communicate and start working as a group as soon as possible. This way, we can effectively complete the tasks at hand. Thankfully, there's CG1413 to help us acquire skills and knowledge for effective communications!

Anyway, I hope you will feel more welcomed here in Singapore or rather NUS as time goes by. If there's anything I can do, I'll gladly help!

Cheers,
Qinxian

Hi Saurabh,

The way you have presented the word ‘communication’ in different stages of your life is nice. Personally I feel that effective communication plays a vital role for a team to achieve its goal.

Being in foreign land, apart from creating a better future, effective communication also helps us in making a lot of friends and helps in bonding with them and by having a large number of friends it makes Singapore a home away from our real home (India).

Teamwork is essential for competing in today’s global arena and for the teamwork to be effective, members in team must effectively communicate so as to express their plans, share their ideas and understand each other viewpoints clearly. Apart from effective communication, for the teamwork to be effective the members of team should be well committed and the team leader should be a role model to the other members. Communication and Teamwork are skills that everyone needs to possess.

As rightly pointed out, Effective communication and teamwork doesn’t come in a single day. It needs a lot of hard work to be put in and through this module CG1413,I am sure we will possess the required skills.

Overall, it is a pleasure to work with you and I had really enjoyed reading your blog.

Santhosh

Hi Saurabh,

I also remember one time when I was in high school when we were tasked to create teams of three for our research project requirement. Most of us chose each other’s close friends. Our own team had it - we knew each other and enjoyed one another. This allowed ease and openness for a good communication within the team, essential for an ideal team setting. In the end, we were able to ace that module with a successful research project. We even won in some research competitions.

You are right that teamwork and communication skills are very important when working with a team of new faces. Perhaps this is one of the greatest challenges in a team setting. There are lots of things that you don’t know about one another; for example, each strengths and weaknesses. Everyone would need to contribute something to the team. Therefore, allocation of work should be done in a way that each one is assigned to a task he is good at so that the members’ talents are well-utilized.

I am sure that you will be able to acquire the skills you need to have a successful future with the hard work you will be investing in this module. All the best!

Regards,
Paul
