Observation of team behavior: Intercultural and Interpersonal communication

“If there is any great secret of success in life, it lies in the ability to put yourself in the other person’s place and to see things from his point of view - as well as your own.” - Henry Ford

Intercultural communication is the process of effectively communicating with people across different cultures and nationalities in a way such that it maintains mutual respect and reduces or minimizes misunderstandings. Studying in an international university, where we have students from different countries, following different cultures, it is very important for me to take care of this aspect of communication.

People from different cultures interpret information in a different manner and hence this can lead to misunderstandings. Hence it really becomes important that one should have proper knowledge and should make use of proper words to express their views. One should be really careful while talking and commenting about traditional and religious beliefs, as this might not be suitable with people across different cultures. This is really important when working in a team as people across different cultures have different opinions about other people. Stereotyping should be avoided. Local communication formalities and styles should be take care of. Though it is difficult to learn a new language, learning a few local words might be handy.

55% of communication is body language and eye contactInterpersonal communication includes the use of proper verbal and non verbal skills in a one on one interaction or in small group meetings. Just three weeks into the semester I have realized that this is the skill one needs to master. Thrown into different groups every time we attend a class, we need to present a proper body language and use hand movements to get our message across, as people have different accents which are not easy to pick up. This is also similar to our CG1108 lab sessions. People from different nationalities are thrown into teams. With limited time in our hands, using universal symbols, hand gestures and proper body language along with effective verbal communication is what helps us in working effectively as a team.

Overall it is really important for us to make proper use of non-verbal and verbal communication skills. Using symbols which have a uniform meaning across different cultures and increasing our knowledge and sensitivity to different cultural backgrounds are the tools for effective intercultural and interpersonal communication.

Here’s a nice video clip which shows how people across different cultures communicate using non-verbal communication skills.

Hello Saurabh!

I like how your blog post clearly explains intercultural and interpersonal communication and how it's so prominent and important in our university, even more so in our society.

I greatly agree with the points brought up in your post. At all times, we have to be sensitive and spare a thought for people of different cultures. While communicating, we have to watch what we say to avoid stepping on each others toes.

I feel that one of the problems that cause breakdowns in intercultural communication is stereotyping. Sometimes, we might also unintentionally blurt out words that can lead to misunderstandings. To prevent this, we need to work on this aspect of communication.

Being in different groups all the time in classes really benefits our interpersonal communication skills. Since different people/members of the group have different ways of communicating, we can learn how to work well in different cultures or groups.

Thankfully, our university promotes a common language which helps in making intercultural communications easier. However, like you said, we must not forget to be sensitive to avoid any misunderstanding.

Cheers

Hi Saurabh,

I like how you structured your post, and how you managed to clearly define intercultural and interpersonal communication. The post was very informative, and easy to read. Overall, readers are able to draw conclusions easily.

As you mentioned in your post, ‘one’ should be careful with what he is saying, especially towards groups of mixed cultures and background. If ‘one’ is able to learn about the cultures of others before hand, communicating would be much easier, smoother, and conflict free. It all comes down to whether the speaker spends the effort to overcome the cultural barriers, to achieve good intercultural and interpersonal communication.

However, I would digress that if the speaker is too restrictive in his words, he would lose all his personality in presenting his views, and any form of creativity would diminish as well. Therefore it would be better, if this ‘one’ person I’ve been talking about is also able to choose wisely when to approach topics known to be unacceptable to others. Hence, as we can see here, good intercultural and interpersonal communication was never an easy task.

By the way, I also liked the way how you incorporated universal gestures and symbols to promote effective intercultural communication. Things like smiles, ‘oooh’s and ‘aaaaah’s are all examples of how one can universally express himself. Even if you throw me into some tribal village in the outskirts of the African desert, I’m sure that the village head would not interpret my nice big cheerful smile as a sign of hostility.

Cheers

Hi Saurabh,

Indeed, intercultural and interpersonal communications are very much a part of us, students at the National University of Singapore. The global setting that NUS has requires us of the skills to effectively communicate across cultures.

In this light, I believe that the module CG1413 "Effective Team Communication" should not be limited to Computer Engineering undergraduates only. In this course, we are being taught how to effectively communicate and work in an intercultural setting. Without need of proof, it is evident that NUS students will need these set of skills in the university, in the workplace, and in personal relationships.

You have a very good realization of the skills that you need to develop and master from this module that will be very helpful to you. That’s the first key to moving forward and achieving to be better. I believe that you will be able to master the communication skills your own. Good luck!

Regards,
Paul

Hi Saurabh,

The way you have presented your post is nice and you have clearly explained the intercultural and interpersonal communication. Being in multi-lingual country like Singapore, we need to implement these skills and these skills become more important for our upcoming projects.

For most of modules which we will be doing in NUS, we (Computer Engineering students) will be divided into groups and mostly the members of the group will be from different culture and race. So, here intercultural communication becomes important as members in group should communicate effectively so as to express their plans, share their ideas, and understand each other’s viewpoints. Moreover, people from different culture have different accent and it will be difficult to understand fully. I think feedback comes to rescue and becomes more important as it helps in enhancing the communication between sender and receiver. Moreover, the most important thing we should keep in mind is that we shouldn’t assume the people from different culture to see things in the way you see it as it might break the communication between the members.

Intercultural communication also helps in breaking the barriers between the members and helps in building a strong relationship with the team members and also helps in building a positive energy within the team.

It is a pleasure to read your blog and let’s implement these skills through this module CG1413.

Regards,
Santhosh.
